Ancy Kunnumpurath, MD, Now Seeing Patients at Carthage Family Health Center
Carthage Area Hospital is excited to welcome Ancy Kunnumpurath, M.D., to its medical team as a Board-Certified internist at Carthage Family Health Center, 117 N. Mechanic St. She began seeing patients on June 8 and is focused on a wide range of primary care services for adults.
Dr. Kunnumpurath is a 1992 graduate of Mahatma Gandhi University School of Medical Education, Kottayam, India. Following medical school, she completed a year of rotating clinical internship in internal medicine, pediatrics, surgery, orthopedics, OB/GYN and public health. Dr. Kunnumpurath completed a three-year residency in internal medicine at United Hospital, Newark, N.J., in 1996 and began practice in New York State the following year. She is Board-Certified in internal medicine.
In 1998, she and her husband, Francis, a Certified Public Accountant, started SpectraMedi Transcription Services, Syracuse. The company provides medical transcription and billing services to hospitals, clinics and practices nationwide. As the business grew, Dr. Kunnumpurath took leave of clinical practice to become the head of quality control for transcription. While helping to manage the business, she became a Certified Medical Coder as “part of an ongoing endeavor to understand every aspect of health care beyond the patient-physician relationship.”
After nearly 18 years working on the business side of medicine and having raised two daughters, Dr. Kunnumpurath decided to return to medical practice earlier this year and enrolled in the Physician Refresher/Re-Entry Program at Drexel University College of Medicine, Philadelphia, Pa.
“Now that my children are out of the house, I found myself missing what got me into medicine in the first place, the patient-physician interaction,” she said.
She recently completed the intense 12-week program at Drexel that included inpatient and outpatient clinical rotations in multiple specialties, case management, daily academic conferences, clinical assessments and lessons on ethics and doctor-patient communication.
Dr. Kunnumpurath said she was attracted to Carthage because of the “opportunity it presented to practice in a small community and spend quality time with patients.”
Her husband continues to lead Spectrum Software Solutions and also operates HillTopFarms in Lafayette, where they raise a variety of pheasants, exotic waterfowl, peacocks androsella.
Daughter, Lisa, 23, holds an undergraduate degree in biology and is presently enrolled in the accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at Utica College while her daughter Julie, 20, studies computer science engineering at SUNY Binghamton and is spending her summer as an intern at Google in Mountain View, Calif. Her husband and younger daughter are also licensed private pilots.
Outside of practice, Dr. Kunnumpurath is a hobby seamstress and enjoys making dresses, traveling and spending time outdoors.
