ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP:

This annual scholarship is awarded to graduating high school seniors from Carthage High School, Beaver River High School, LaFargeville High School, Hugh C. Williams Senior High School, Madrid-Waddington Central School, Heuvelton Central School, and Hammond Central School, as well as any graduating high school senior of a Carthage Area Hospital employee. Applicants must have an interest in pursuing a career in healthcare in either a clinical or supportive role. A group of Foundation Board Members score the applications and make their selections each year. The scholarship was named after two exemplary individuals who made an incredible impact in our local community.

ABOUT DR. FRANK HARVEY:

Born Dec. 3, 1957, in Bangor, ME, he was the son of Francis S. and Shirley M. Bragan Harvey. He graduated from Central High School, East Corinth. Dr. Harvey received his Bachelor of Arts in zoology with honors at the University of Maine, Orono; medical degree at Tufts University School of Medicine, Boston; and completed his family practice residency at Womack Army Hospital, Fort Bragg, N.C. He was chief resident in 1987. He married Arlene Dunham, Nov. 7, 1979, at United Methodist Church, East Corinth. Dr. Harvey entered the U.S. Army in 1980. He was a medical corps officer, achieving the rank of major in the U.S. Army, 1987-1991; serving as staff physician at Fort Drum, N.Y., and was medical director of the eight bed holding unit. He served in the Army Reserve until 2009; was medical director for Carthage Area Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit from 1991 until the time of his death and medical director of Genesis Healthcare Urgent Care Center, Watertown, N.Y., 1997-1999.

Dr. Frank E. Harvey was a physician and co-founder at Family Practice Associates with his friend and business partner, Dr. Kenneth Fish. With the help of Carthage Area Hospital, they started up their practice in the early 90’s.

Dr. Harvey died at the age of 51 on Tuesday, November 3, 2009 from a sudden heart attack.

ABOUT JOANN ZANDO:

 

Joann was born November 1, 1942 in Cornwall On Hudson, the daughter of the late Deforest L. and Marion (Johnson) Reed. She was a 1960 graduate of Carthage Central School and Central City Business Institute in Syracuse. Joann was secretary for Mr. Robert Murphy, Principal of West Carthage Elementary for many years. She married Gino M. Zando on August 7, 1965 at St. James Church in Carthage. Mr. Zando died on January 25, 2013. Joann was administrative assistant in the Regional Woodlands Department of the St. Regis Paper Company in Deferiet, Gray’s Flower Shop in Carthage and was the Development Manager for the Carthage Area Hospital Foundation for many years.

Joann was a Trustee for the Village of Deferiet, a member of the Carthage Area Hospital Auxiliary, Red Hats Society, and a hostess for the Miss NYS Pageant. She was very proud to have walked in the Heart Walk each year for the American Heart Association in her husband’s memory.

Joann L. Zando, 74, died Monday, January 30, 2017 from an automobile accident on Interstate 81.

She was a treasured employee of the Carthage Area Hospital family and we honor her name with this scholarship.
