Carthage Area Hospital Urologist to Receive Rural Medicine “Preceptor of the Year” Award from SUNY Upstate - Carthage Area Hospital

Dr. Felix Oben to be honored at upcoming Rural Medicine Symposium

Carthage Area Hospital (CAH) Urologist, Dr. Felix Oben, M.D., FACS will be recognized for his work as a preceptor at the upcoming Rural Medicine Symposium on March 16th, 2022, where he will be presented with the SUNY Upstate Rural Medicine “Preceptor of the Year,” Award during their graduation ceremony at 5:00 PM at the historic Hotel Syracuse – Marriott Downtown. The Rural Medicine Program at Upstate has the mission of identifying, recruiting and nurturing those interested in future rural or small-town practice. This event is the first annual symposium to showcase the efforts of their students.

“Dr. Oben was selected because of the mentorship he consistently provides third-year students training in the Rural Medical (RMED) Program. These students live and train in small-towns across New York State for 5 months. They complete three core clinical rotations and a Rural Medicine Elective. Dr. Oben trains students in Urology as part of their surgery clinical rotation,” said Carrie A. Roseamelia, PhD, Assistant Dean for Rural Medicine at SUNY Upstate.

One student wrote, “During my time in the Oswego community as an RMED student, Dr. Oben was a fantastic teacher. He instructed me on exam skills and many concepts and treatments for urologic conditions that I use today as a family doctor. Though many things he taught, you can’t learn from a textbook – the value of the doctor-patient relationship, what it looks like to go above and beyond to care for your patients, and the importance of a good sense of humor. I so appreciate his willingness to give me a hands-on, in depth learning experience that helped shape the physician I am today,” said Larissa Raymond, SUNY Upstate Graduate, 2022 – Rural Medicine Scholar in Oswego, NY.
