After the ER: Next Steps after an Emergency Visit - Carthage Area Hospital

From broken bones to chest pains, some injuries and symptoms can’t wait. In these cases, it’s important to seek care at your nearest emergency room. But the care needed for medical emergencies doesn’t end there. In fact, there are several important steps to take after discharge. Learn more about what to do after an emergency visit to Carthage Area Hospital.

Before Leaving the Hospital

You’ll likely undergo tests and imaging, like X-rays or ultrasounds, during your time in the emergency room. A doctor will review results with you and provide a preliminary diagnosis. It’s important to remember, however, that a complete diagnosis may require you to see specialists or other care providers.

The emergency room staff will also forward a record of your visit to your primary care physician. If you don’t have a doctor, you’ll receive recommendations to help you find one and assistance in scheduling follow-up appointments.

Understanding Discharge Instructions

You’ll also be given detailed discharge instructions before going home. Discharge instructions may include:

  • Prescriptions
  • A schedule for taking medications
  • Information about follow-up appointments with specialists and/or primary care physicians
  • Additional testing, imaging and other diagnostic procedures
  • Limitations on physical activity
  • Dietary restrictions
  • And more…

If you don’t understand these instructions, it’s important to ask for clarification. Ask as many questions as needed to help you feel confident – your doctor will want to be certain you understand what to do. You may also ask for copies of test results at this time if they have not already been provided.

What to Do at Home

It’s extremely important that you follow all discharge instructions to the letter. Be sure to take medications as directed and follow through on any additional appointments. Doing so will help you recover and avoid complicating your injury or condition.

The hospital will submit all necessary paperwork to your insurance provider, who will determine what is covered and what you are responsible for out-of-pocket. If you have questions about your financial responsibilities, our billing department can provide additional information and provide financial assistance for eligible individuals.
