Three Carthage High School Students, One Beaver River Student Selected
The Carthage Area Hospital Foundation and its Board of Directors are pleased to announce the 2019 recipients of the Dr. Frank Harvey & JoAnn Zando Health Care Scholarship.
This annual scholarship is awarded to graduating high school seniors from Carthage High School and Beaver River High School, as well as any graduating high school senior of a Carthage Area Hospital employee. Awardees must have an interest in pursuing a career in health care in either a clinical or support role.
This year, nearly a dozen seniors applied for the scholarship. Four were selected and were awarded $750 each. From Carthage High School, awardees are: Jason Uhlinger II Carthage; Emma Covillon, Carthage; and Steven Sullivan, Carthage. From Beaver River High School, the final awardee is Julia Scout Schwendy, Lowville.
“It’s exciting to see these students eagerly choose the health care field as their career path. Many of these students were inspired through their participation in the MASH Camp program through Fort Drum Regional Health Planning Organization (FDRHPO) or through the New Vision Program at BOCES. Those opportunities give students a hands-on experience and introduce them to all facets of health care. We wish them all the best in their future endeavors and can’t wait to see what they accomplish over the next several years,” said Taylour Scanlin, Foundation and Marketing Executive Director.
Jason Uhlinger II is the son of Natalie and Jason Uhlinger. Mr. Uhlinger will attend Hartwick College in August to study Biology/Pre-Med. He plans to pursue a career as a Surgeon. He is a varsity athlete who played soccer and track and field. Mr. Uhlinger’s extracurricular activities included Spanish club and Key club. In addition, he was inducted into the National Honor Society. He also participated in the Jefferson-Lewis BOCES New Vision Health and Medical Careers Program.
Emma Covillon is the daughter of Robert and Annmarie Covillon. Ms. Covillon will attend University of Buffalo in August to study Psychology. She hopes to continue her education and pursue a career as a Trauma surgeon. Her extracurricular activities include Key Club, Dance, Student Government, National Honor Society, among others. She also participated in the MASH Camp program through Fort Drum Regional Health Planning Organization.

Steven Sullivan is the son of Scott and Sandra Sullivan. Mr. Sullivan will attend SUNY Polytechnic Institute in August to study Nursing. His sister, Carly Sullivan was awarded the Harvey/Zando Scholarship award in 2014. His extracurricular activities included Key Club, JROTC, Varsity Soccer, Spanish Club, among others. Mr. Sullivan also participated in the Jefferson-Lewis BOCES New Vision Health and Medical Careers Program.
Julia Scout Schwendy is the daughter of John Schwendy & Marianne Green. Ms. Schwendy will attend Nazareth College in August to study Nursing. She hopes to pursue a career as a Nurse Practitioner. Her extracurricular activities include Chorus, Band, Spanish Club, Soccer, Track, Youth Advisory Council, among others. She also participated in the MASH Camp program through Fort Drum Regional Health Planning Organization.
About the Scholarship
The Dr. Frank Harvey & JoAnn Zando Healthcare Scholarship is named in memory of two people who dedicated their lives to improving health care for North Country residents. Dr. Frank E. Harvey was a longtime family physician who practiced in the Carthage and Watertown areas at Family Practice Associates until his untimely death in 2009 at the age of 52. JoAnn Zando was a longtime Carthage Area Hospital employee who, at the time of her death in 2017, served as Development Manager for the Carthage Area Hospital Foundation.
Seniors who plan to attend an accredited two or four-year College, or the LPN program at BOCES, and will be enrolled in an academic program in the health or medical field, are eligible to apply. A scholarship selection committee determines awardees after a thorough review of each applicant’s academic and scholastic record, leadership skills, community involvement, communication skills and overall interest in a health care career.
