4 Common Foot Problems - Carthage Area Hospital

The feet are made up of flexible, complex structures, comprising bones, joints, muscles and soft tissues. While these parts let us stand up, walk, run and jump, they can also cause discomfort due to neglect, unsuitable shoes and just simple wear and tear over the years. Here are some of the most common foot problems.

  1. Athlete’s Foot

A contagious skin infection caused by the ringworm fungus, athlete’s foot usually presents between the toes or on the bottoms of the feet as a white, scaly rash with an inflamed red base. Itching, peeling and burning are all symptoms of this fungal infection, and it can also cause a slight odor. If OTC antifungal creams don’t resolve the issue, you may need to see a podiatrist about prescription medication.

  1. Bunions

A bony bump that forms at the joint at the base of the toe, a bunion can cause pain, redness and stiffness. Because bunions force the big toe to turn in, they often trigger discomfort when wearing tight or narrow shoes, and they can lead to conditions like arthritis. If special footwear and OTC pain relievers don’t reduce irritation, surgery may be required.

  1. Hammertoes

Hammertoes occur due to a muscle and ligament imbalance around the toe joint. As a result, the middle joint of the toe bends and becomes stuck in the bent position. Hammertoes typically affect the second, third or fourth toe and are mainly caused by wearing ill-fitting shoes. Over time, the rubbing of the hammertoe against a shoe can cause corns and calluses. Switching to roomier footwear, orthotics and certain exercises can be used to treat this condition, although surgery is sometimes necessary.

  1. Plantar Fasciitis

This condition is one of the most common causes of heel pain. When the band of tissue that connects the ball of the foot to the heel, known as the fascia, becomes inflamed, it can cause stabbing pain that’s usually most prominent during the first steps of the day or after a long period of rest. If ignored, plantar fasciitis can result in chronic heel pain. Conservative treatments, like icing the painful area, are usually all that are needed for recovery.
