“Today, expectant parents are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of hospital quality and understand that it needs to play a factor in selecting where to deliver their baby,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Healthgrades. “The 2020 Labor and Delivery Excellence Award™ recognizes hospitals that provide high quality care for mothers during labor and delivery, so parents can have confidence in their decision.”

To help consumers evaluate and compare hospital performance in labor and delivery, Healthgrades analyzed patient outcomes data for virtually every hospital in each of the 16 states that provide all-payer state data for years 2016 through 2018. Healthgrades found variation in hospital performance makes a significant difference in terms of clinical outcomes:

  • Patients have a 40% lower risk of experiencing complication(s) if treated at hospitals that received the Labor and Delivery Excellence Award™, versus hospitals that did not receive this Award.*
  • Patients have a 6% lower risk of experiencing complication(s) if treated at hospitals that received the 5-Star for Vaginal Delivery (Natural Childbirth), versus hospitals rated 1-Star.*
  • Patients have a 4% lower risk of experiencing complication(s) if treated at hospitals that received the 5-Star for C-Section Delivery, versus hospitals rated 1-Star.*
  • From 2016 through 2018, if all hospitals performed similarly to those that received the Labor and Delivery Excellence Award™, 124,867 patient complications could have potentially been avoided*.

“Carthage Area Hospital prides itself in providing excellent and up-to-date care to the community. On behalf of the OB/GYN department, I want to congratulate our staff on receiving this distinguished Healthgrades award for 3 consecutive years and for continuing to play an important part in the delivery of quality care to the women of our community,” said Walter Dodard, DO, FACOOG, Medical Director of OB/GYN Department.
