Common Respiratory Illnesses Treated

Here at Carthage Area Hospital, we treat an array of respiratory conditions from victims of injuries to those experiencing sudden catastrophic illnesses. Some of the respiratory Illnesses we treat in our facility include:

  • Asthma: Asthma is a common, chronic respiratory condition that causes breathing difficulties due to inflammation of the airways. Asthma symptoms include dry cough, wheezing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath.
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD): This condition is an umbrella term that encompasses several respiratory illnesses that cause breathlessness. Patients may experience a variety of symptoms, such as shortness of breath, and wheezing, as well as mucus production.
  • Bronchitis: This condition is characterized by a cough, and may include chest discomfort, shortness of breath, and a fever with chills. Bronchitis typically results from inflammation of the lining of the bronchial tubes, which are necessary for carrying air to and from the lungs.
  • Pneumonia: Pneumonia is a common lung condition caused by an infection in the lungs. The infection can be bacterial, viral, or fungal. While most patients can recover in one to three weeks, pneumonia can be extremely serious for other patients.
  • Post-operative pulmonary complications: These conditions affect the respiratory system and may occur within 48 to 72 hours after surgery.
  • Congestive heart failure (CHF): This is a condition that occurs when the heart becomes unable to pump blood to the rest of the body efficiently.  This causes fluid levels to accumulate, and blood can back up into the heart and lungs, leading to shortness of breath.
  • Myocardial infarction: Also known as a heart attack, this medical emergency occurs due to a lack of blood flow to the heart. This is usually the result of a blockage in one or more of the coronary arteries.
  • Respiratory failure: This is a condition in which the lungs are unable to supply the blood with ample oxygen and/or remove carbon dioxide. It is typically the result of an injury, lung damage, a blood clot, or other causes.
