Military Medical Services in Northern New York – Carthage Area Hospital

Fort Drum

Fort Drum Medical Services and Training

As one of only a few military installations in the United States without its own hospital and healthcare facilities onsite, Fort Drum military personnel and their families are proudly served by the team at Carthage Area Hospital. With you in mind, our hospital’s mission has always been to provide excellent healthcare and value-based personal care to all who seek comfort and healing. This not only includes family medicine for residents living in Jefferson, northern Lewis, and southern St. Lawrence counties, but also healthcare support for our soldiers from Fort Drum and the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry).

Offsite Healthcare Advantages

At Carthage Area Hospital, you can rest assured that you’re in good hands. The current healthcare model has been in effect since 1985 and has matured to where military personnel and their families both benefit from these unique circumstances. Advantages of our partnership with Fort Drum include:

  • Healthcare options: You have the ability to choose a provider or primary care manager and a hospital. This choice allows you to decide where you wish to seek care given certain specialties and availabilities.
  • Interacting with the community: This healthcare model is a great way for the community of Carthage and its members to give back to the men and women in uniform and their families. Providing excellent healthcare you can trust is our way of showing our deep gratitude.

Ways We Continue to Improve

In an effort to meet our hospital’s mission in healthcare support and wellbeing, we continually assess our efforts to improve as well as expand needed services and technologies for our community. That’s why we continuously strive to build and maintain our valued relationship with Fort Drum through several avenues:

  • Advisory committee: Our hospital hosts an advisory committee where representatives from the Fort Drum Garrison Command, 10th Mountain Division (LI) Command Group, and the Medical Department Activity (MEDDAC) Command Group at Guthrie Clinic participate in discussing healthcare needs and concerns. This provides a productive forum for keeping key leaders at Carthage Area Hospital informed and in tune with how to best support our military.
  • Hospital Liaison Officer (LNO): We have created a hospital liaison officer to Fort Drum. With a sound understanding of how to navigate military channels, this medical provider with prior service experience works to maintain our relationship.
  • Partnership activities with Fort Drum: Our continued partnership with Fort Drum has led to several activities in developing and continuing to train military medical personnel as well as mutual support operations in our emergency room. We participate in an Annual FT Drum MASCAL training exercise and the SANE program.
  • Shared resources: We have several External Resource Sharing Agreements (ERSAs) with orthopedics, gynecology, oral surgery, podiatry, and urology. Fort Drum providers also work in our emergency department as per diem providers maintaining critical skills.
