Carthage Hospital Welcomes General Surgeon to Medical Staff - Carthage Area Hospital

Dr. Rabie Stephan Joins Surgical Clinic through Synergy Surgicalists Partnership

Carthage Area Hospital is pleased to welcome Dr. Rabie N. Stephan to its Surgical Clinic team as a general surgeon, effective this week. Dr. Stephan joins the medical staff as the third general surgeon now seeing patients in the hospital-based clinic that provides 24-hour surgical coverage.

A Buffalo resident, Dr. Stephan comes to Carthage from Kalieda Health’s Upper Allegheny Health System, Olean, N.Y., where he also practiced as a general surgeon.

“I look forward to working in a smaller, personal environment and delivering great care to the area,” he said. “The size of the hospital and the community was a big factor in my decision to practice here.”

Dr. Stephan specializes in a wide range of laparoscopic and advanced laparoscopic surgical procedures, including treatment of the gallbladder and appendix — cholecystectomy and appendectomy — ventral hernia repair and advanced laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair, among others.

“Dr. Stephan adds considerable depth to our surgical team, bringing nearly three decades of quality experience in a diverse range of procedures,” said Rich Duvall, Carthage Area Hospital CEO. “We are excited to introduce Dr. Stephan to the North Country and appreciate that he chose Carthage as a place to practice surgery.”

Rabie N. Stephan, MD, FACS

A native of Beirut, Lebanon, Dr. Stephan graduated with honors from the University of Bonn School of Medicine, Bonn, Germany, in 1982. From 1985 to 1986, he was a Winchester Fellow in the Yale University School of Medicine Department of Surgery, New Haven, Conn. Following his experience at Yale, Dr. Stephan spent a year as a research associate in the Michigan State University Department of Surgery, East Lansing. In 1990, he completed a surgical residency at the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine. In 1993, he completed a renal/pancreas transplant fellowship at Hahnemann University Hospital, Philadelphia, Pa. Dr. Stephan is Board Certified in general surgery and surgical critical care and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

About the Carthage Area Hospital Surgical Clinic

The hospital’s Surgical Clinic began operations in June 2008. In October 2017, the clinic moved to a remodeled clinical suite on the main hospital campus. Carthage Area Hospital partnered with Synergy Surgicalists to provide specialized 24-hour on-call surgical coverage. The clinic move and this partnership welcomed additional surgeons to the medical staff, expanded patient access to surgical care, and reduced wait times for many elective procedures.

A general surgeon is always on call for emergency procedures at the hospital. Visit carthagehospital.com/service/general-surgery for a complete list of common procedures our surgeons perform.

The surgical clinic participates with most insurance programs, including TRICARE, Martin’s Point, Medicare and Medicaid. Clinic hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. All patients are welcome to the Surgical Clinic by self-referral or by obtaining primary care referral. Call (315) 493-0110 for information how to obtain a referral today.
