Next Community Engagement Series Event Set for Sept.27
at Carthage Elks Lodge Focusing on Women’s Health
Nearly three-dozen new and expectant mothers and fathers joined obstetric, pediatric and nutrition staff this week for a baby shower at Carthage Area Hospital to honor motherhood.
About 35 pregnant women and fathers-to-be attended the second annual free event, “Healthy Babies, Healthy Moms” on Thursday, Aug. 24, in the hospital’s main campus courtyard, 1001 West St.
“It is exciting to see so many soon-to-be parents take advantage of this opportunity to engage in prenatal and pediatric health,” said Natalie Burnham, Carthage Area Hospital director of patient, community and employee engagement. “We are particularly proud of our obstetrics team, which works hard to provide best-in-class care to all the hospital’s moms and new babies.”
The open house-style event was part of the hospital’s 2017 Community Engagement Series and featured information and education on a range of topics, including newborn and infant care and safety, breastfeeding, infant and mother nutrition, and postpartum and parent wellness.
A meet-and-greet with the hospital’s team of obstetric and pediatric care providers kicked off the evening. Attendees also had the chance to meet the obstetrics department nurse manager and tour the hospital’s one-of-a-kind maternity unit, which features private labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum care suites.
Guests enjoyed complimentary light food and beverages. Several gift packages were also given away in a raffle.
Representatives from Martin’s Point HealthCare, the North Country Prenatal/Perinatal Council and Heartbeats for Madden were on hand to answer questions and provide information about support, services and local resources.
The event featured three speakers from the hospital’s medical and clinical staff who discussed a range of prenatal and pediatric care topics, including: Dr. Kimberly Ginyard, director of
Carthage Area Hospital’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, who spoke about prenatal care and what expectant mothers should do before, during and after pregnancy; Dr. Diane Jones, director of the hospital’s Department of Pediatrics, who spoke about infant, toddler and child care issues and services; and registered Dietician Carly R. Draper, RD, CDN, CDE, director of the hospital’s Clinical Nutrition Department, who spoke about proper nutrition during and after pregnancy as well as newborn and infant nutrition.
The next event, a women’s health fair, is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 27, from 5:30 to 7:30 at the Carthage Elks Lodge, 511 Fulton St., which will focus on a wide range of women’s health issues and servcies. The event will include complimentary light food and beverages.

Carthage Area Hospital’s 2017 Community Engagement Series is a population health initiative aimed at educating residents in the hospital’s 83,000-person service area of Jefferson, St. Lawrence and Lewis counties. Each month, from April through December, the hospital features a different health topic to empower residents to make more informed decisions about their health and wellness and care.
